What the heck? Unoriginal parts? |

| Yes, some people do fit their Triumphs with "aftermarket" or "non-original" parts. Let's face it; technology has improved quite a bit in the 20, 30, 50 years since our cars were built, and some parts substitutions can make them more reliable as well as safer. And then there's the fact that you can sometimes get a superior product at a siginificant cost savings over an original part... Of course, aftermarket parts aren't for everyone, but for those who are interested, here you go. Another good place to look is on VTR's maintenance pages.
Many Triumphs can use parts from other vehicles with little or no adaptation required. Or so the urban legends go. One of the more popular modifications seems to be fitting a GM alternator, for example -- a more reliable and less expensive alternative to the Lucas, "Prince of Darkness", original-equipment items. I don't have exact details on the GM alternator substitution, but apparently one will fit unmodified into a Spitfire 1500, and will fit with a modified (bored out) original pulley into a TR2-4. The TR would have to be converted to negative ground prior to fitting the alternator. One simply walks into a parts store and asks for a GM alternator; you'll need to decide which "clock position" you want the connectors to be at. More details, including wiring instructions, on VTR's pages. A good Spitfire mod is to fit Corvette air shocks to a Spitfire's rear suspension. VTR's maintenace page details this; the author of this page has ordered the shocks from JC Whitney ($60) for his '77 1500, but probably won't be fitting them for quite some time. |
